A wabi-kusa refers to a plant substrate (usually soil) with aquatic plants growing on or from it. Wabi kusas are popular in eastern culture because they are extremely easy to care for and exist as unique pieces of living art. There is no literal translation of wabi-kusa in english. 'Wabi' denotes something's imperfect natural beauty (like in wabi-sabi). 'Kusa' means 'grass' or sometimes 'plant'.
